The Biorex Diagnostics Cholinesterase Assay is a ready-to-use reagent system for the kinetic determination of cholinesterase activity in human serum and plasma. The assay is based on the enzymatic hydrolysis of butyrylthiocholine by cholinesterase, producing thiocholine and butyrate. The thiocholine generated reacts with hexacyanoferrate(III), a yellow compound, reducing it to hexacyanoferrate(II), which is colourless. This reaction leads to a measurable decrease in absorbance, which is monitored kinetically to determine enzyme activity.
Cholinesterase activity is an important indicator of liver function and exposure to certain toxic substances, including organophosphates and carbamates.
